“Catholicism is seen by some to be against everything that liberals stand for; whether it’s LGBT rights or the role of women in the Church. Well as a liberal, a Catholic, and as a trans-person, I can say that is…not entirely true. Catholicism has taught me to respect and love everyone, regardless of who they are or where they came from and so it has saddened me that there are so many people who are discriminated against because of their lifestyles. God is love and has no hate in Him, so when we yell hateful and derogatory remarks at each other, even in His name, we are doing the complete opposite of what He wants.
I can’t say that I have always felt like I was trans…but I have always felt different. There are times I’ve felt, and I’m sure others have too, that God would hate me because I felt a certain way. But then I think of the different stories of the Bible. So many people Jesus hung around with were “undesirable” in society.
So it gives me hope that if Jesus was able to love those people surely He would love me. Denying who I am is unnerving to me; it feels wrong to pretend to be something that I am not. Catholicism has taught me that God’s love is unconditional and I hope that the everyday people in the Church can act more understanding to those that man has deemed “undesirable.”
